Transcript [00:04] Welcome back to Salem News Channel. I [00:07] got to tell you, I love National [00:09] Religious Broadcasters. I'm a member and [00:11] the National Religious Broadcasters [00:12] Association has released its five-part [00:15] NRB and Bara Group report on the state [00:18] of Christian media. The report found [00:20] that Christian media holds a significant [00:21] presence in American life and the data [00:23] paints a picture of a movement that is [00:25] not only growing but is also shaping the [00:28] future of media. More than 60% of [00:30] American adults report consuming [00:31] Christian media in some form, whether [00:33] through television, radio, podcasts, [00:35] news websites, or social media, or even [00:37] YouTube. 28% of Christian media users [00:40] are heavy users, consuming an average of [00:42] more than six platforms on a weekly [00:43] basis and more than two different [00:45] platforms every day. NRB president and [00:47] CEO Troy A. Miller reacted to the [00:49] report, stating, "This report confirms [00:52] what many of us in Christian media have [00:54] sensed for years. People aren't just [00:55] tuning in. and they're relying on [00:56] Christian content to shape their [00:58] worldview, strengthen their faith, and [00:59] find direction in a world flooded with [01:01] noise and uncertainty. He couldn't be [01:04] more right about that. He's joining me [01:05] now to discuss president and CEO of [01:07] National Religious Broadcasters, Troy [01:09] Miller. Welcome back, Troy. Uh, great to [01:12] be with you again. Thanks, Stacy. All [01:13] right, so let's talk about this. First [01:15] of all, I consider this report to be an [01:17] amazing and resounding success. [01:19] Something that you celebrate annually at [01:21] your convention for national religious [01:23] broadcasters. huge attendance this year [01:25] and then there's even more. Tell us tell [01:27] us more about this. Yeah, this report is [01:30] a a big success and and a big um you [01:33] know uh confirmation that Christian [01:35] media is alive and well today in in the [01:38] society. So when we did this that one of [01:41] the keys to this too, we asked people [01:43] you know their use of Christian media [01:45] outside of their home church. So not to [01:47] include their home church, not their [01:49] pastor's sermons. And to think that 60% [01:52] of the general population is tuning in [01:55] every day. And not not only that, Stacy, [01:58] uh, they're tuning in at at rates that [02:01] that far exceed any other medium. [02:05] So, one of the things that that [02:06] encourages me for is here at Salem, [02:08] we're a Christian broadcaster and we do [02:11] have a lot of people watching what we're [02:12] doing and responding to our work here. [02:14] But it's the message, Troy, that I think [02:17] is so important. It's one of faith and [02:20] family and courage and our nation and [02:23] also of truth. I think that's what's [02:25] missing from the traditional media [02:27] outlets that I know my parents watched [02:29] as a kid. It was always ABC, CBS or NBC. [02:34] That's what I I saw on the television as [02:36] a kid. Now those outlets really don't [02:39] reflect my worldview. [02:42] Right. This is a real rejection of the [02:44] secular, you know, mainstream media [02:46] worldview uh out there. It tells us that [02:48] they're not get, you know, people are [02:50] are looking at that and it's not [02:51] fulfilling what they need. Look, the [02:54] interesting thing was that that 66% of [02:57] Americans, again, 66% of Americans found [03:01] Christian media valuable and [03:03] trustworthy. You know, we all know, uh, [03:05] if you're watching any of the mainstream [03:07] numbers in there, mainstream legacy [03:09] media would love to get out of the [03:11] teens, uh, right now. So, it's a real [03:13] rejection of the messages they're [03:15] hearing in the mainstream media today. [03:17] And it just shows you how far out of [03:19] touch mainstream media is with the [03:21] general population. [03:22] It does. And then there's also like the [03:25] the things that are going on [03:27] politically, how it used to be that [03:30] politics was just it was like one [03:32] channel, right? You you would they would [03:33] have some politics in a news report. [03:36] They would have some politics on a [03:38] daytime television show, right? They [03:39] they they'd call it topofthe-hour news. [03:42] Now the whole show is politics. I [03:44] remember I'm old enough to remember Troy [03:46] when The View on ABC was a news interest [03:49] show like not news but uh it was like [03:52] culture, fashion, uh food, hair [03:56] makeovers and then one one segment [03:58] called hot topics and now the whole show [04:01] is politics and disinformation. [04:04] Yeah. You know, and I think because of [04:05] that, you know, one of the things we saw [04:07] in the survey as well was that the [04:09] number one reason that people were [04:11] tuning into Christian media was for [04:13] encouragement and hope. And that was the [04:16] number one reason. I think they tune [04:17] into so many shows today, as you said, [04:19] they've been either overly politicalized [04:21] and it's not and it's not a neutral uh [04:24] political message either. It's a [04:26] propaganda message. It's all leaning in [04:28] one direction. And so the the news, the [04:30] mainstream media is so so full of [04:32] despair and so full of uh hate and and [04:36] depression. Um people are turning into [04:38] and saying, "Look, I I need some hope [04:40] and encouragement on life." And they're [04:42] finding it in Christian media. Yeah. And [04:45] you know what? I'm going to say I'm [04:46] going to go ahead and say it. Um they [04:48] are really negative. There's that big [04:50] study that came out this week that shows [04:52] that people on the left have a higher [04:54] level of mental illness. And in [04:56] scripture, it actually tells us that [04:58] we're supposed to focus on what is good, [05:00] beautiful, truthful, honest. We we're [05:03] supposed to focus on good things to help [05:05] strengthen our minds. And we're supposed [05:06] to read scripture to strengthen our [05:08] intellect and our ability to reason. If [05:11] you don't ever focus on scripture, and [05:14] let's face it, ABC, NBC, CBS, they're [05:16] not going to have those kind of things [05:18] on their content. They won't even [05:19] acknowledge that biblical scripture is [05:21] is good for you, that it feeds you. Um, [05:24] it's no wonder Christian communications [05:25] are booming. [05:27] Yeah, that's exactly right. It's all [05:29] that negative. And look, the other thing [05:30] about it is the, you know, the old [05:32] stereotype, the people that watch [05:34] Christian television, watch Christian [05:35] media, uh, these are the older [05:37] generations, the baby boomers, the [05:39] exgeners. Uh, that that's not true. So, [05:42] our study showed that 64% of Gen Z of [05:46] Gen Z is listening, tuning into [05:48] Christian media, 58% of the millennials. [05:51] Now, a lot of that is on social media, [05:53] but that's really encouraging that [05:55] they're looking for that message and [05:57] they're going out to the social media [05:59] platforms and they're finding it. Yeah. [06:01] And you know what, Troy, the reason for [06:02] that is because I'm Gen X. I'm locked [06:04] in, but I have kids who are they're [06:07] they're technically Gen Z. So, when [06:10] they're when when we're talking, I point [06:12] them to Christian media. But what's more [06:14] interesting is they tell me about new [06:16] content producers that are bringing [06:18] truth. They'll tell me, "Oh, you're not [06:20] watching so and so." Or my daughter [06:22] pebbles me all we we we're in a contest [06:24] as to which of us can send more links. [06:26] She sends me things on Instagram. And I [06:28] click through and it is Christian [06:30] content, but it it doesn't look [06:32] Christian. It's it looks like Gen Z. [06:34] It's young people. They're speaking [06:36] truth and they're funny and I find [06:38] really great content that way. I [06:40] actually love it because it saves me [06:42] work like, you know, digging it up for [06:45] myself. She she literally digs it up for [06:46] me, Troy. So yeah, these young people [06:48] want the same thing. They want to be [06:49] hopeful. [06:51] Yeah, they want to be hopeful. They want [06:53] to understand uh how to interact in the [06:56] world today. They're rejecting the [06:58] messages they're hearing on these [06:59] platforms. Um and they look the other [07:02] thing, the number two reason, they want [07:04] to know how to love God better and [07:08] people and and how to be a better [07:11] Christian. I mean, so they're not just [07:12] tuning in, they're tuning in so it [07:15] changes their lives. I love that and I'm [07:18] very excited about the work that um [07:21] Christian broadcasters are doing and [07:23] about the aggregation of that powerhouse [07:26] together in national religious [07:28] broadcasters. It's a place where [07:30] Christian broadcasters and communicators [07:32] and people who are want to be in that [07:33] space can really find a home. It's [07:36] nrb.org. I recommend that you go there. [07:39] Troy Miller, have a great weekend. Thank [07:41] you. You too. Have a great weekend. [07:43] Thank you. All right. Good to see you.
